K-Gr 1–Tired Fred won't go to bed without his teddy bear, and that's a problem for his whole family. His wife and son join him in searching for the missing companion, but it is not until the man slips on a dirty sock the dog is chewing that Bear appears. The canine is rewarded with a big steak, Principal Fred goes to bed, and peace returns to the house. The principal acts like a two-year-old and has a tantrum because he can't find his teddy, but the setup is not really believable. The mixed-media illustrations are large and cartoonish, and might be appealing because of the simple lines and liberal use of white space. However, they do not stand out as particularly creative or engaging. No doubt plenty of families like the Joneses exist, but the reader's expectation of some redemption and evolution can't be ignored. BOOKS YOU CAN PLAY WITH The main attraction of Go To Bed, Fred: A Good Night Book & Muppet Puppet is, of course, the Muppet: pale-blue Fred has a wild tuft of bright yellow hair, a lime-green nose and a wide mouth. Flaps open a mirrored medicine chest, a dollhouse, a standing wardrobe; movable doors connect the well-appointed rooms; and beds, bathtub, towel warmer and other furniture pop out in readiness. There are even chandeliers. Reader's Digest Young Families, meanwhile, offers two packaged sets that incorporate books into play. Teddy's Shop, a laminated box the size of a small shoebox, has a windowpane front that reveals its wares: three miniature 24-page books, a puzzle, a fold-out board game (with tokens nearly as large as the game), playing cards, stickers and a height chart (to measure the lack of growth of the reader's stuffed animals and toys). These anthropomorphized vegetables have a surreal quality, their sly smiles signifying more of a fantasy than a bedtime story. GrandPre ( Chin Yu Min and the Ginger Cat ) again displays her flair for unusual perspectives and lighting; however, the sharp angles and elongated characters of her debut picture book give way here to a wavy elegance: a row of dancing carrots seems suspended, as if underwater. Despite some inviting imagery and clever wordplay (the potatoes close their eyes, the onions weep themselves to sleep), King's text does not live up to the promise of the artwork. The frustratingly uneven meter of the verse impedes the flow: "Every pea and carrot / Every head of lettuce / Cabbage, bean, and brussels sprout / Will be tucked in / Before the stars come out."
