Product information :
PreSchool-In her self-titled debut (Houghton, 1999), this cranky girl did not want to get dressed. Here, "When Clara Cookie/Had to go to bed,/She stamped and she yelled/Till her face turned red." She takes out her frustrations on her stuffed animals, glaring at them and ordering them to sleep. All comply except Popcorn, her teddy. She tries to persuade him to go to bed with a variety of techniques commonly utilized by parents who find themselves in similar circumstances, and finally realizes that sometimes the best way to get a reluctant sleeper down is to do it together. "I'll sing you a song./I'll put you to bed./Then I'll lie down beside you./You'll be close to my head." The spare text is accompanied by big, bright illustrations. The facial expressions of the characters clearly convey their moods. Although the text is occasionally a bit forced, Ziefert's lilting rhyme and Bolam's full-page illustrations combine to make this a book with persuasive potential in the never-ending going-to-bed battle.Piper L.
